I will try to write this journal entry without getting overwhelmed, when, indeed, this topic most definitely overwhelms me. Today's authors wear many hats; as a self-published author, I am expected to world build on the page and in the socials by growing a mailing list, engaging followers, creating and editing video content and so on and so on. The modern age of writing gives us plenty of reasons to celebrate having creative autonomy and a direct line to readers, but I think even the best at our craft will admit that it can be a bit daunting.
Balancing Craft and Connection
Crafting a story takes time and focus and during this process, I find that I need a lot of quiet and uninfluenced space to truly sink deep into the world of my characters. Well, uninfluenced space is not how you would describe the internet. There's a unique balance that must take place to successfully vacillate between solitude and socials and I believe it's an on-going feat that shifts based on the needs of both my story and my timeline.
My Path Forward
Right now, I am focusing on growing my TikTok followers to at least 1,000. This will allow me to add my website link to my bio and begin inviting my social media friends to join my mailing list. Is it fun? Sometimes. It's definitely not more fun than being immersed in my stories but I'm choosing platforms and content that feel authentic and that do not impede on my creative flow. And moving forward as a fully committed self-published author, I intend to embrace these modern expectations for writers and continue to be the successful and competent author that I know I am.
Discussion: As a reader or writer, how do you think the digital age has reshaped storytelling?
